About Diabesity Institute

Our mission is to increase access to effective science-based medical care for those suffering from or at risk for diabesity, which currently affects more than half of our population.

Obesity, type 2 diabetes, and prediabetes are on the rise regardless of race, gender, age, socioeconomic status or educational level.  The standard approach is outdated and ineffective.  We must act now to advance the science of metabolism both in the general community and among healthcare professionals.  A paradigm shift can end the suffering and conquer this devastating epidemic that impacts so many children and adults.

Please join the movement and help us make a difference!

The Diabesity Institute (DI), a non-profit 501(c)(3), was founded in March 2012 by Emily Cooper, M.D. Concerned citizens, parents, students, scientists, medical professionals, and community leaders have come together to support the Diabesity Institute by offering their valuable time, energy, knowledge, and financial support.

About Dr. Emily Cooper

Dr. Cooper is a Seattle-based physician specializing in the underlying causes of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and infertility. She is board certified in Obesity Medicine, Sports Medicine, and Family Medicine.

Inspired by the urgent need for education in the area of metabolic dysfunction, she founded the Diabesity Institute (DI), a nonprofit, with the goal of increasing access to effective science-based treatment for those suffering from or at risk for type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Dr. Cooper is instrumental in DI’s scientific research, including case reports highlighting successful medical diagnosis and treatment of metabolic dysfunction. She is often interviewed in the media on the topics of metabolism and obesity, sharing scientific information and explaining why obesity is a medical problem. In her private practice, the Cooper Center for Metabolism, she diagnoses and treats metabolic causes of type 2 diabetes, obesity, and infertility.

Fat Science podcast with Dr. Emily Cooper

She is also the host of Fat Science, a podcast on a mission to explain where our fat really comes from and why it won’t go (and stay!) away. In each episode, Dr. Cooper and her longtime patients, designer and creative director Andrea Taylor, and journalist Mark Wright, share little-known facts and personal experiences to dispel misconceptions, reduce stigma, and instill hope. Fat Science is committed to creating a world where people are empowered with accurate information about metabolism and recognize that fat isn’t a failure.
